Short answer: for the P1500 and P3000, the manual gives wear limits for the pinion, rack and guide wheels, plus a service life for the parachute brake. Replace the brake after five years of service or ten activations under rated load, whichever comes first. Measure parts against the limits in the table below, and replace those at or beyond them.
ALPMAKSAN, an İstanbul-based manufacturer of mast climbing work platforms and construction hoists, publishes these limits in the user manual of its P1500 and P3000 platforms. The values apply to those models. Do not apply them to other machines.
What are the wear limits for the pinion, rack and guide wheels?
| Part | New | Replace at or beyond |
|---|---|---|
| Pinion (L) | 37 mm | 35 mm |
| Rack (L) | 12.56 mm | 10.6 mm |
| Guide wheel (diameter) | 100 mm | 96 mm |
| Parachute brake (diameter) | 137 mm | 133 mm |
The pinion and rack are inspected weekly and quarterly, so take measurements at those visits. The maintenance schedule shows when each check falls due.
How do you check the parachute brake for wear?
Measure the friction lining thickness at several points. If the measured wear exceeds the permitted limit, replace the lining. Also inspect the brake linings, springs and the inner surface of the brake hub for uniform wear, and replace any damaged component.
When must the parachute brake be replaced?
The manual states that the parachute brake shall be replaced after five years of service or after ten activations under rated load, whichever occurs first. Keep a log of activations. A lit parachute brake lamp on the control panel shows an activation. See safety devices and emergency lowering.
How is the brake tested after it has been removed for maintenance?
After the parachute brake has been removed for maintenance, the manual calls for a functional test:
- Prepare the platform for the test.
- Load the machine to its rated load.
- Release the motor brake with the control device supplied by the manufacturer and let the platform descend about 1.5 m.
- If the platform locks before completing this travel, the parachute brake works correctly.
- If it does not lock as expected, inspect the complete parachute brake assembly.
This is a workshop or service procedure for trained technicians. It is not part of daily operation.
Why do regulators pay attention to brakes and wear?
Mechanical wear that goes unnoticed can leave a platform without effective braking. The UK HSE asks users to check brakes for wear and assess them against the manufacturer's discard criteria, and to carry out functional checks of the automatic brake on each drive unit. HSE safety alert OSHA also lists inadequate component inspection and improper maintenance among common mast climber incident causes. OSHA eTool
What should buyers of used machines check?
For second-hand machines, ask for the brake replacement date, activation count and wear measurements of the pinions, racks and guide wheels, then compare them with the manufacturer's limits. Our used mast climber buying checklist covers the rest.
Frequently asked questions
How often is the parachute brake replaced?
After five years of service or ten activations under rated load, whichever occurs first.
Can I keep using a pinion below the wear limit?
No. At or beyond the limit, the part is replaced.
Do these limits apply to every mast climber?
No. They are for the P1500 and P3000 as given in the ALPMAKSAN manual. Other machines have their own limits.
How do I know the parachute brake has activated?
A warning lamp on the control panel, operated by the parachute switch, shows activation.
Who should replace these parts?
Trained technicians using original parts. ALPMAKSAN technical service can advise.
