Does a 3,000 kg Mast Climber Carry 3,000 kg in Every Configuration?

Understand how mast climber load capacity, platform configuration and load distribution work together before selecting or operating an MCWP.

Not necessarily. A catalogue capacity such as 3,000 kg is a headline specification for a machine family; it should not be interpreted as permission to place 3,000 kg anywhere on every possible platform arrangement.

For a mast climbing work platform, the permitted load depends on the actual configuration and the manufacturer's load information. Platform length, extensions, mast arrangement and where the load is positioned can all matter.

Catalogue capacity and configuration capacity are not the same question

ALPMAKSAN lists the P1500 with a 1,500 kg catalogue capacity and the P3000 with a 3,000 kg catalogue capacity. These values identify the model families. They do not replace the load chart or technical instructions for the selected arrangement.

That distinction is important during purchasing. If a project requires a specific working length and a specific amount of material on the platform, both must be checked together.

What is a load chart?

A load chart describes permissible loading for defined machine configurations. Depending on the equipment, it may relate load limits to platform length, mast arrangement, extensions or zones on the platform.

IPAF specifically emphasises the use of the correct MCWP load chart and the manufacturer's instructions. A single capacity figure should therefore not be used as the only basis for project selection.

Load distribution matters

Consider a simplified example. A project team expects:

These are hypothetical values, not an approved configuration.

The next question is where the 1,900 kg will be placed. If most material is concentrated near one end of a platform, the loading condition is different from the same weight distributed over the working deck.

This is why a technical proposal should include both the expected total load and a simple load-position sketch.

Platform length can change the allowable load

Longer is not automatically better. Increasing the working deck may change the permitted load for a given configuration. The exact limits must come from the documentation for that machine and arrangement.

For this reason, avoid statements such as:

"The machine is rated at 3,000 kg, so we can use 3,000 kg on any platform length."

A better purchasing question is:

"For the platform length and arrangement proposed for this project, what is the permitted load and where may that load be positioned?"

What should you send to the manufacturer or supplier?

For a meaningful capacity check, provide:

  • required working height,
  • required platform length,
  • number of workers,
  • approximate tool weight,
  • material type and weight,
  • approximate package dimensions,
  • intended loading positions,
  • facade drawing or elevation,
  • any balconies, recesses or projections,
  • planned accessories or special extensions.

This gives the technical team enough context to evaluate an arrangement instead of answering only with a catalogue number.

P1500 and P3000: how to read the headline figures

What not to do

Do not:

  • add up worker and material weight and stop there,
  • assume maximum catalogue capacity applies to every deck length,
  • use a load chart from a different model,
  • treat an extension or cantilever as a purely cosmetic accessory,
  • copy a generic capacity limit from a blog or marketplace listing,
  • alter the configuration without technical approval.

Frequently asked questions

If my total load is below 3,000 kg, is the P3000 automatically suitable?

No. Total weight is only one part of the assessment. Platform arrangement, load location, site conditions and the approved configuration must also be checked.

Does evenly distributing the load solve every capacity issue?

No. Distribution matters, but it does not override the manufacturer's limits for the selected configuration.

Can I calculate the safe load myself from simple structural formulas?

Project teams can estimate operational loads, but the permitted machine loading should come from the manufacturer's approved documentation and competent technical assessment.

What is the best way to request a capacity confirmation?

Send a drawing showing the required platform dimensions and load positions, together with worker and material weights. Ask for confirmation against the proposed configuration.
