Short answer: on a high-rise site, a personnel and material hoist is the everyday way to move crews and materials between floors. Keep the tower crane for heavy, long or bulky loads, and let facade crews lift their materials on the mast climbing work platform deck. Stairs suit only short, occasional trips. Floors, daily trips and package sizes decide the mix.
ALPMAKSAN, an İstanbul-based manufacturer of mast climbing work platforms and construction hoists, builds equipment for both jobs. This guide explains which tool should carry what, and how to size the plan before you rent or buy.
Which equipment moves what on a high-rise site?
Each method has one job it does best. The table shows the usual split; the final split depends on your programme and the manufacturer's limits for each machine.
| Method | People | Materials | Best for | Watch-outs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stairs or stair tower | Yes | Hand-carried only | Low floors, occasional trips, emergency route | Climb time and fatigue grow with every floor |
| Tower crane | Not for routine crew transport | Heavy, long or bulky loads | Steel, formwork, rebar bundles, large panels | Crane time is shared between trades and costly when idle |
| Personnel and material hoist | Yes | Yes, within rated load and cage size | Daily crew trips, tools, palletised and boxed materials to each floor | Needs a base area, landing gates and anchorage to the building |
| Material-only hoist | No riders | Yes | Materials only | People may not ride, except for inspection and maintenance |
| Mast climbing work platform | Facade crew on the deck | Facade materials to the workface | Panels, glass, insulation, masonry along the facade | It is a work platform, not a floor-to-floor lift |
OSHA's construction rules state that no one may ride a material hoist except for inspection and maintenance, which is why the hoist type matters as much as its capacity.
When is a construction hoist better than a crane?
A hoist is better when the load fits the cage and the trip is routine: crews, tools, boxed or palletised materials, finishing products. Moving these by hoist frees the crane for the lifts only a crane can make.
SAIA, the North American Scaffold & Access Industry Association, lists "less need to tie up expensive crane time as trades can move material with the construction elevator" among the benefits of a site hoist. A hoist also serves every landing throughout the day, while crane slots are booked around structural work and weather.
The crane is still the right tool for structural steel, formwork, long rebar bundles and anything that does not fit the cage.
Is a hoist worth it compared with the stairs?
Usually, once the building has more than a few floors. SAIA published a US cost example for an eight-storey building with 30 workers making five round trips a day for eight months: total cost was $143,666 with a stair tower and $76,785 with a construction elevator, 46.55% lower.
That figure is an industry example with its own wage, speed and trip assumptions, not a guarantee. Recalculate it with your own crew size, floors and daily trips. Faster access also means crews start work without recovering from the climb.
When should facade materials go on the platform deck?
When the crew on the platform installs the material on the facade. A mast climbing work platform lifts the crew and its materials together to the workface, so panels, glass or insulation do not have to wait for a crane slot or be carried across the floor plate.
CPWR notes that mast climbers allow vertical transfer of large loads and workers together on a single platform. The P1500 single-mast work platform carries 1,500 kg and the P3000 twin-mast work platform 3,000 kg, always within the configuration's load chart. Our guide to mast climbing work platform load capacity explains how to plan deck loads.
A work platform is not a floor-to-floor hoist. If materials must reach inner floors independently of the facade work, plan a hoist as well. The P1500 mast system is designed to be compatible with ALPMAKSAN personnel and material hoists.
How do you size the vertical logistics plan?
Start from four numbers: the top landing height, the heaviest single load, the largest package dimension and the peak number of trips, usually at shift start and after breaks. Then check them against the machine data.
- List the materials that will not fit a hoist cage and keep them for the crane.
- Check the heaviest routine load against the hoist's rated capacity.
- Check the longest package against the cage dimensions.
- Estimate one-way travel time: height ÷ speed. At 150 m, 16 m/min takes about 9.4 minutes; 30 m/min takes 5 minutes, before stops.
- Compare the trips you need at peak with the trips one hoist can make; if the queue is too long, consider a faster or second hoist.
| ALPMAKSAN hoist | H1500 | H2000 |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity | 1,500 kg | 2,000 kg |
| Speed | 16 m/min | 30 m/min |
| Maximum height | 150 m | 150 m |
| Cage (W × D × H) | 1300 × 2200 × 2100 mm | 1450 × 2400 × 2100 mm |
| Anchorage distance | 6 m | 6 m |
| People per trip (our estimate) | 18 | 25 |
The people row is our own calculation from rated capacity, assuming 80 kg per person and rounding down. The permitted number of persons is the one on the machine's data plate and in the manufacturer's manual.
What keeps vertical logistics running?
Machine availability. When the hoist stops, crews return to the stairs and materials wait for the crane, so service and fault response belong in the logistics plan.
ALPMAKSAN provides 7/24 support. With the MTS Machine Tracking System, PLC alarm and fault signals from the hoist or platform are visible in real time, and each machine's service history is kept and searchable by serial number.
Frequently asked questions
Can a construction hoist carry workers and materials together?
A personnel and material hoist can, within its rated load and the manufacturer's instructions. A material-only hoist cannot carry riders.
Do I still need a crane if I have a hoist?
Usually yes, for structural steel, formwork and loads that do not fit the cage. The hoist takes over the routine daily trips.
Can a mast climbing work platform carry materials?
Yes, facade materials can travel to the workface with the crew, within the load chart. It does not replace a floor-to-floor hoist.
How many people fit in an ALPMAKSAN hoist cage?
By our estimate of 80 kg per person, 18 for the H1500 and 25 for the H2000. The data plate and manual set the permitted number.
How many hoists does a high-rise project need?
There is no fixed rule. Compare peak trips with one hoist's round-trip time, and add capacity if queues at shift start are too long.
